Morocco Day 4… Fes…

The city of Fes…

Morocco’s cultural and spiritual capital… Also called the Mecca of the West, or the Athens of Africa…

It has the largest medina in the world, and it had the first university in the world.

They say this medina has been unchanged for the last few centuries, and that this medina is the largest car-free urban area in the world… I almost got killed by a donkey going uphill.. because the alley-ways are so narrow and these things are loaded so heavily, and are pushed so fast to gain momentum. It literally knocked me over to one side…

… One thing I found talking to people is that everybody here in Morocco loves Bollywood. Everybody. I even put it to the test. I’d ask everyone I met if they heard of Bollywood. Either they would start laughing, dancing and singing a Hindi film song, or they’d start naming their favourite actors and actresses… Amitabh was the most mentioned (obviously:) He used to be my favourite too in the early 80’s… I even had a large poster of him on my wall, and even used to comb my hair like him (when I had some:)… It’s funny looking at the crazy little things we used to do, and how far we’ve come. 🙂

Moroccans say that Hindi films have stories similar to theirs. And when they watch them on Bollywood movies, they easily relate the stories to their own lives…

We past mosques and there were big signs saying that only Muslims were allowed. The guide would just look at me, shake his head, and say “that wasn’t even written in the Koran…” Interesting how religion has changed so much with time.

I had some discussions with people about Sufism, the inner mystical dimension of Islam. We had some good discussions, it has similarities to traditional Indian spiritual thought.

It’s the first day of Ramadan. I will observe today. I haven’t eaten all day and will probably eat at sunset. That’s only because I’ve been eating so much cuz the food tastes so good – and I need to give my stomach a break 🙂
